High Altitude Ballooning
Calgary and Area
"Poor Mans Space program"
This was a launch by a team from SFU as part of their MBA program. We dedicated this launch to Leonard Nimoy as he had died recently. The balloon also landed in Vulcan county, which we thought was fitting.
Wow this sure was an interesting flight, we originally launched at around 8am with a failure in the line connecting the balloon to the payload, it ripped in the middle of the line (as far as we can tell from the video of it going up). The team didn't want to give up on this launch, so we quickly decided we needed to back to Calgary and pick up anther tank of hydrogen (we had another balloon ready to go) We were back at the launch site ready to go with the 2nd tank. We had also noticed that the still camera wasn't taking pictures on the first attempt, so this was fixed as well. For the 2nd flight we decided to double up on all of the lines connecting things together, we had only single points of failures in the metal carabiners.
This flight used a 1200 gram balloon, launched from Carbon. we had 1 aprs tracker and 1 spot. Tracking worked well and We made it to between 98,000 and 102,000 ft. This was a 110KM chase, we ended up in a large open field approx 110 KM south of the launch site. We launched at 1:24 in the afternoon, we picked the payload up around 3:40pm 0.2 KM from the gravel road. It was very windy on the ground. The landing was very close to the prediction. This was our latest launch yet!
