High Altitude Ballooning
Calgary and Area
"Poor Mans Space program"
This flight was GPS with a transmitter running around 10 mW, AM on 433mhz. The balloon was launched from inside Calgary. The balloon was predicted to fly south for 70+ km. Average speed was estimated around 80 KM/h. This was a test of a 100 gram balloon inflated with H2 gas. Rate of ascent around 3 m/s. Payload mass is 75 grams with a 4.5Volt battery pack (3xAAA alkine) This launch used around 8cubic feet of H2 (total) and the payload total weight was 75 grams. We used field-hell, RTTY for this flight. Both were readable for the flight, with errors. Overall it was a success, however alot of problems with getting ready. First my program to convert to APRS couldn't read my format (my mistake - i added a field), then my soundcard crashed. When we were ready to launch the GPS wouldn't start up, I have a feeling it didn't like the 6+ volts from the 2x cr123 batteries, so i switched to the backup tracker which was mounted to a 3xAAA holder and launched with 3 alkine batteries.
