High Altitude Ballooning
Calgary and Area
"Poor Mans Space program"
This flight worked out well as a test with a homemade transmitter running around 10 mW (or less). My amp didn't work well on vhf. The balloon was launched from inside Calgary (with permission from edm flight services) The balloon was predicted to burst around irracana. The balloon travel North East. Average speed was estimated around 25 KM/h and burst altitude was estimated around 20-25K feet. This was a test of using cheap (large 3 foot) party balloons inflated with H2 gas. Rate of ascent around 200 feet/min. These balloons have a mass of 35grams each.
The transmitter was on 144.800mhz and we tracked it from inside my house. We could pick up clearly upto 0.5 hours, after that the signal was very weak.
This launch used around 8cubic feet of H2 (total) and the payload total weight was 85 grams.
Video / Audio
The following was decoded from Calgary, note this capture started 7 minutes after launch: decoded from 0921 mst Launch was at 0930 mst Approx 1000 mst signal appeared to be lost (the CW was still readable after this point, but not decodable by computer, and it appears that my recording has additional noise in it) still heard after 1054 mst signal gone at 1108 mst Predictions: 1:45 hours 45KM NE 200 psi used, approx 20 cubic feet (less then 10 was launched)
