High Altitude Ballooning
Calgary and Area
"Poor Mans Space program"
This flight worked out well as a test with a transmitter running around 10 mW. The balloon was launched from inside Calgary (with permission from edm flight services) The balloon was predicted to burst southEast of strathmore. Average speed was estimated around 60 KM/h and burst altitude was estimated around 20-25K feet. This was a test of using cheap (large 3 foot) party balloons inflated with H2 gas. Rate of ascent around 200 feet/min. These balloons have a mass of 35grams each. Payload mass is 16 grams with a 3Volt battery.
The transmitter was on 433.945mhz and we tracked it from inside my house. We could pick up clearly upto 45 minutes, after that the signal abrutly dropped out. (probably landed)
This launch used around 3cubic feet of H2 (total) and the payload total weight was 16 grams. We used field-hell for this flight
