"Poor Mans Space program"
This flight was a test with a transmitter running around 10 mW. The balloon was launched from inside Calgary. The balloon was predicted to fly eastsouthEast of strathmore. Average speed was estimated around 70 KM/h and float altitude was estimated around 6000-7000 feet. This was a test of using cheap (foil 3 foot) party balloons inflated with H2 gas. Rate of ascent around 100 feet/min. These balloons have a mass of 50grams each. Payload mass is 10 grams with a 3Volt battery.
The transmitter was on 433.945mhz and we tracked it from inside my house. We could pick up clearly upto 25 minutes, after that the signal was very week outside at 35 minutes. I believe this is due to the low float altitude and possible 37km range of the balloon.
This launch used around 2.5cubic feet of H2 (total) and the payload total weight was 10 grams. We used field-hell, rtty and morse code for this flight.
